Kathleen Herles

December 9, 1937 — October 16, 2022

Portsmouth

Kathleen Eloise Herles, 84, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, October 16, 2022.  Born on December 9, 1937 in Franklin Furnace, she was a daughter of the late Jasper Mitchell, Sr. and Gladys Horsley Mitchell and was a retired RN in the surgery department at Southern Ohio Medical Center, with over 30 years of service.

Kathleen graduated in 1955 from Green High School, where she played the clarinet in the band and participated in the Glee Club.

She faithfully attended Garden City Free Will Baptist Church in her early years, and then became a faithful member at Berean Baptist Church.  Accepting Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at age 15, in the wintery month of February, she was baptized in a lake to show a public profession of her faith in Christ.  At Berean, she sang in the choir, helped in the nursery and also served as an AWANA leader.  Kathleen knew the Lord was her strong tower, her rock, and she knew that He heard her prayers and believed He would answer them.

Determined to be a nurse like her sister, after high school she diligently studied as a nursing student to one day to become a proud graduate of the Mercy Hospital’s School of Nursing, Class of 1958.

Because of her love of music, she not only played the clarinet in school, she later purchased a clarinet in her retirement years to once again play for the mere enjoyment it simply brought her.  She also loved to sing, and later in retirement, she became a member of the Scioto County Festival Choir.

Also preceding her in death were her husband, Marvin Herles, whom she married July 30, 1960; her brothers, Winifred “Bud” Goodwin, Russ Goodwin and Lloyd Mitchell and her sisters, Garnet Whitaker, Ellen “Adene” Chinn and Esther Hatten Fox,

Surviving are three sons, Forrest Herles of Erlanger, KY, Samuel (Alice) Herles and John (Joy Williams) Herles, all of Wheelersburg; a daughter, Marie (Andy) Ash of Montrose, MI and five grandchildren, Neil Herles, J. D. Herles, Athena Herles, Isabella Herles and Brisbane Ash.
