Jacquelyn Sylvia, 88, of Wheelersburg, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born June 20, 1922 in Camden, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Mildred May Overholser. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 63 years, Donald B. Sylvia in 2008. Surviving are her children, Anne (Richard) Powell of Minford, Ellen (Ed) Miller of Sunbury, Janet (Ron) Ashley of Wheelersburg and Bane (Bonnie) Sylvia of West Portsmouth; her 10 grandchildren, Pat (Carey) Miller, Natalie (Gary) Shooter, Mike (Laura) Miller, Lee (Christy) Powell, Brooks Powell, Kara Bailey, Tessa (Justin) Cooper, Seth Ashley, Adam (Molly) Sylvia and Rebecca Sylvia; and ten great-grandchildren, Gabby, Haley and Cecilia Miller, Olivia and Madison Shooter, Jacob Miller, Alex and Jenna Powell, and Nathan and Nick Sylvia. Jac was Summa Cum Laude graduate of Ohio University and an English teacher at Wheelersburg High School for many years, and after retirement, was an instructor in G.E.D. and Developmental English at Shawnee State University. She had continued to enjoy many visits and letters from former students and volunteered with Hospice for many happy years. A funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. on Monday at the Brant Funeral Home in Sciotoville with Peter Michael and Loren Hardin officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park. The family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. on Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to SOMC Hospice, 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662 and the Portsmouth Public Library, 1220 Gallia Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662. The family of Jac would like to thank her caregivers and hospice for their exceptional loving care and her many special friends, and extends heartfelt thanks to Jacquelyn’s special nephew, Tony and his wife Paula Sturgeon, for their loving care and devotion.
