Emma Jean Adkins

August 18, 1937 — September 7, 2014

Emma Jean Adkins, 77, of Portsmouth, died Sunday afternoon, September 7, 2014, at the SOMC Hospice Center.  Born on August 18, 1937, she was a daughter of the late John and Creasy Snyder Martin and a former phlebotomist at the Southern Ohio Medical Center.  Emma was a member of Bonser Run Christian Baptist Church, and 1955 graduate of Minford High School and an SOMC Hospice volunteer.

Also preceding her in death were her husband, Paul Adkins, a son, Mark Adkins; a daughter, Denise Hambrick; five brothers, John, Ralph, Norman, Lawrence and Raymond Martin and two sisters, Evelyn Johnson and Eleatha Martin.

Surviving are two sons, Randall (Christie) Adkins of Rosemount and Scott (Donna) Adkins of Portsmouth; two daughters, Glenda (Shorty Rotenberry) Cordle of Portsmouth and Susan Yvette (Brian) Sherman of Sciotoville and sisters-in-law, Ann Adkins, Betty Adkins, Carolyn Smith, Freda Corey, Joyce Martin and Patty Martin.  Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, Derrick Morrison, Kristin Sherman, Shay Ann Adkins, Deven (Kristina) Adkins, TaNaya (Randy) Day, Matthew (Jackie) Shaffer, Jennifer Caulley, Jamie (Rick) Gambill, Mark (Chris Fenimore) Adkins, Bethany (David) Dederich and Brandon Smith; seventeen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, including a special niece and caregiver, Pam Shonkwiler.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Bonser Run Christian Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Deck and Darrell Lore officiating.  Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service at the church.  Memorial contributions may be made to SOMC Hospice.
