Edna Shonkwiler

August 4, 1922 — March 5, 2018

Edna L. Shonkwiler, 95, of Portsmouth, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 5, 2018.  Born on August 4, 1922 in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Sinda Jordan Moore and was a 1941 graduate of Portsmouth High School.

Also preceding her in death on March 23, 2002 was the love of her life, Clyde, whom she married on April 17, 1943; five sisters, Marie Ackerman, Eva Weaver, Dorothy Ackerman, Ruby Meeker and Maxine Goad; six brothers, Harvey, Albert, John, Tom, Bill and Ted Moore and a daughter-in-law, Jennie Shonkwiler.

Edna was the oldest member of the Portsmouth International Pentecostal Church of Christ and their conference.  She locally was a Sunday School teacher, song leader, board member, trustee, ladies’ auxiliary member, custodian, secretary, treasurer and drove people to church.  Edna formerly was employed at Williams Manufacturing Co., Broadway Market, Vaughn’s Grocery and cared for the elderly.

Surviving are three sons, Curt of Springfield, Gary (Brenda) of Portsmouth and Dave (Linda) of Morrow; nine grandchildren, Tony (Crystal), Dave (Michelle), Chuck, Timothy, Michael, Chad and Thomas Shonkwiler, Kimberly (Bob) Collins and Natalie (Chuck) Shigley; twenty-six great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Affectionately known at “Granny” to many, she never knew a stranger.  Her life was reminiscent of Dorcus in Acts: 9 in the scriptures---“She did what she could”.

A Celebration of Edna’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 9th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE with Bishop Clyde Hughes, Pastor Larry Blevins and Pastor Trudy Wright officiating.  Interment will be in Lucasville Cemetery.

The family will receive guests at Brant’s from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and one hour prior to the service.

Memorial gifts may be made to the I.P.C.C. building fund.
